Today, I bring you a review of the Transformers Ultimate Edition Limited EX Optimus Prime & Frozen Megatron Set by Bruko. This set is a repaint of the Transformers Ultimate Edition Optimus Prime & Megatron from the first movie. Considering the excellent metallic EX Optimus Prime from Transformers 7, I have high expectations for this EX Optimus Prime. How does the toy perform? Follow this review to find out.

▼The packaging structure and style follow the battle-damaged Transformers 7 Optimus Prime & Nemesis Prime set. A paper strip secures the two boxes together, printed with illustrations of EX Optimus Prime and EX Frozen Megatron. The Bruko and Transformers logos are located in the top left and bottom right corners, respectively.

▼The individual boxes have altered colors based on the original packaging. Optimus Prime’s box is mainly red, while Megatron’s box is primarily blue. The back of the box includes basic character introductions, offering an overview for those unfamiliar with the characters.

▼The assembly process for the toy isn’t difficult, though many parts feel tighter due to the additional paint layers. However, this tightness remains within an acceptable range.Once assembled, the Optimus Prime set includes the figure, dual swords, an oil barrel cannon, interchangeable hands, a base, special effects parts, and a manual. The Megatron set includes the figure, a handheld cannon, an interchangeable chest piece, a base, special effects parts, and a manual.

▼The entirety of Optimus Prime’s red and blue armor is fully covered with metallic paint. This high-quality finish significantly enhances the overall presentation compared to the standard version. Unfortunately, I don’t have the standard version on hand to provide a comparison.

▼Optimus Prime’s head sculpt features the iconic masked face design, with a slightly chibi-style modification compared to the original version. By lightly tapping the figure, both the eyes and chest light up. However, due to the strong studio lighting, the toy’s lighting effect appears less noticeable. I turned off the studio lights to show the effect. Thanks to the high-quality metallic paint, the red and blue armor’s three-dimensional effect is significantly enhanced.

▼Since transformation mechanics are not a concern, the toy’s back is designed with maximum attention to appearance. The metallic paint extends to the rear without any compromise, and the two slanted armor plates on the back even feature flame patterns.

▼The head sculpt can rotate horizontally and tilt slightly upward. The arms can rotate vertically, lift outward about 90 degrees, the elbows can rotate and bend about 90 degrees, and the wrists can rotate.

The waist can rotate horizontally. The legs can kick forward and sideways about 45 degrees and backward about 60 degrees. The knees can rotate and bend about 90 degrees, and the feet can achieve 360-degree articulation. This level of articulation is comparable to classic toy lines, and it’s sufficient for standard poses. Additionally, the new interchangeable hands have resolved the previous “flipper” issue—the flipper portion is now smaller, and the hand details are more refined.

▼When attaching Optimus Prime’s dual swords, the arm guards need to be removed. As mentioned earlier, the thicker paint makes removal slightly tight. These dual swords are standard weapons for Optimus in the first trilogy. Although Optimus only used one sword in the first movie, the toy generously includes two.

▼However, only one barrel cannon is provided. Optimus indeed only used one cannon in the first movie, so it’s hard to fault them for this. But it would’ve been better if a pair were included.

▼The design of Frozen Megatron is clearly inspired by the 2007 Frozen Megatron toy. The color scheme has been changed to a blue-gray style, with the addition of numerous blue transparent parts. The standard version of Megatron had a flaw where the armor details looked bulky, but with the Frozen color scheme and transparent parts, this issue is no longer apparent. Instead, it looks like the toy is coated with a layer of ice, creating a completely different effect from the standard version.

▼By tapping the toy, you can make Megatron’s eyes emit a red light. I turned off the lights here so you can better see the effect. This is the only place where Frozen Megatron emits red light in its standard form, reminiscent of the scene in the first movie where Sam’s ancestor accidentally activated Megatron in the cave.

▼Megatron’s chest armor can be replaced with the version scorched by the AllSpark. However, the Frozen Megatron design actually replicates the stages where Megatron was either crashed beneath the ice or frozen by humans under the Hoover Dam. The AllSpark scorching occurred later during the New York battle. This is essentially a carryover from the standard version’s features and doesn’t offer much new to discuss.

▼Megatron’s weapon is this long cannon. In the movie, this cannon was formed by the fusion of his two hands, but Blokko has designed it as a single-hand-held weapon. This issue already existed in the standard version, and unfortunately, it hasn’t been addressed in the EX Frozen version.

▼This transparent Sharktoy is an exclusive gift available only when purchased from the official store. It’s a non-sale item and cannot be found elsewhere. The Sharktoy comes in large (L) and small (S) sizes; the one I have is the L size. There are also four different colors available, so if you’re interested, keep an eye out.

The Sharktoy has a ball joint at the arms, and its mouth can open up to 90 degrees, but there are no other points of articulation. Its main function is as a storage box; you can open its mouth to store small parts or pieces inside. The mouth closes securely, and I think the design is quite creative. It would be even better if they included more of these.

▼To conclude, this Transformers Beyond Edition EX Limited Edition set, though consisting of repainted products, completely transforms the original toys’ quality with the addition of metallic paint and transparent parts. The original standard version was already well-made, and this EX version further elevates the overall effect significantly. Plus, purchasing from the official store comes with a Sharktoy storage box as a bonus. As a fan of the live-action movies, I highly recommend this set.
