What I’m bringing you today is Dr.Wu’s latest release, the SGC Convention-exclusive G2 Sideswipe and unreleased Scourge set. I’ve really been looking forward to this set for a long time. G2 Sideswipe comes with a lot of accessories, so he should be a lot of fun to play with, while the unreleased Scourge seems to be the first version of this design on the market. Putting these two together in one set is purely stacking buffs. How do the toys perform? Let’s find out in the review.
▼The packaging still follows the style of Dr.Wu’s Micro Series. The box features artwork of G2 Sideswipe and the unreleased Scourge, with the Micro Series logo in the upper-left corner of both character illustrations, and the SGC and Dr.Wu logos below. The back of the box mainly shows photos of the toys in robot mode, along with handling reminders for the Micro Series.

▼The contents include the Sideswipe figure, a pair of saw wheels, a small gun, two submachine guns, a machete, the Scourge figure and his accompanying small gun, an alternate head, two character cards, and an instruction manual. Considering how closely G2 Sideswipe is associated with the saw wheels, I went ahead and installed them first.

▼Compared with G1, G2 Sideswipe has a much more aggressive appearance, giving him a spiky, ferocious feel all over. His head sculpt has been changed to this wide-open-mouth roaring expression. Such a tiny Sideswipe throwing such a huge tantrum creates a different kind of contrasting cuteness.

▼Because the toy is very small, the transformation process is extremely simple, so you can basically figure out how it transforms just by looking at how the vehicle shell splits apart from the back. The backpack is basically one solid piece consisting of the roof and front windshield. It can also store weapons through the ports, which we’ll talk about later.

▼The toy’s arms can rotate vertically and can be raised horizontally to slightly over 90 degrees, while the elbows can bend about 180 degrees. The legs can kick forward, backward, and outward about 90 degrees, while bending the knees requires opening the rear leg panels, after which the knees can bend close to 90 degrees. G2 Sideswipe’s articulation is exactly the same as the original mold, which is about normal for the small cars in this series.

▼I’ve already installed Sideswipe’s saw wheels. Besides those, the weapons include a machete. If you look closely, you can even see chips along the blade. Considering how many robots he’s killed, it makes perfect sense that the blade would get damaged from all that chopping, right?
I was reminded of something I saw online saying that Shi Nai’an had actually killed people. In the scene where Wu Song spills blood at Yuanyang Tower, he not only knew that killing too many people would cause a blade to roll and require a replacement, but also that splashing cold water on human hearts and livers when eating them for revenge was meant to improve the texture. You simply couldn’t write things like this without some real-life experience. Art originates from life and rises above life.

▼These two submachine guns are also iconic weapons of G2 Sideswipe. The two guns have different designs and are relatively short, looking very much like the small submachine guns or machine pistols used in video games.

▼In addition, the set also includes Sideswipe’s original small gun. The machete can be stored on his back when not in use, and the different weapons can be mounted together through their connectors, so you can also get creative and come up with different weapon configurations.

▼The toy’s transformation is very simple, and you can basically remember all the steps after transforming it once. The vehicle shell is relatively complete, with the red windows given a pearlescent-like finish, and there is also dedicated paintwork around the door handles.

▼All the weapon accessories can be fully stored in vehicle mode. It looks a bit like Sideswipe is carrying a huge load of gear and running off overnight, either to escape or to pick a fight. “I’m gonna find an Autobot and mess him up.jpg.”

▼This unreleased Scourge is also one of the main highlights of the set. This black Scourge is based on an unused design from the 1986 movie. I searched around, and it seems that no other manufacturer has made this design so far, making Dr.Wu the first to do it. The unreleased Scourge has this cyclops-style head sculpt. The single eye gives him a distinctly inhuman feel, with more tension and a greater sense of oppression compared with the final version.
As we all know, if you have a face, you can express human emotions such as joy, anger, sorrow, and happiness. If you don’t have a face, it gives people a sense that communication is impossible. The horror of something that can communicate versus the horror of something that cannot communicate—which is more frightening? There’s no need to say more. Of course, if you don’t like this cyclops head sculpt, the manufacturer also includes a head based on the original design, which can be swapped in and out.

▼The grid-like pattern on the chest armor is also newly sculpted for this release. The unreleased Scourge is primarily black all over, and the two large capes pair extremely well with the black color scheme. If they had used the final Scourge design as the Sweeps and this unreleased Scourge as Scourge himself—or vice versa—would that have worked better?

▼The toy’s head can rotate horizontally, while the arms can rotate vertically and be raised horizontally about 90 degrees. The elbows can rotate horizontally and bend about 90 degrees. The waist can rotate horizontally, while the legs can kick forward, backward, and outward about 90 degrees. The knees can rotate horizontally and bend about 90 degrees, and the feet can angle inward for ground contact. Scourge’s articulation is already comparable to mainstream transforming toys, and for such a tiny figure, his articulation is even better than that of some larger-scale toys.

▼Scourge’s weapon is this small gun. The gun’s handle is designed like a clip and attaches by clamping onto the recessed area of the hand. As I mentioned before, with toys this small, making certain characters’ weapons use plug-in pegs carries a certain risk of breakage, while using a clip design avoids that problem.

▼The toy’s transformation is very simple as well, and is easy enough to remember after transforming it just once. Scourge’s vehicle mode is an airship, with the outer edges of the airship primarily white and the areas closer to the center primarily black. I think this color scheme may have been designed so that when the airship is flying through space in the animation, the white outline would make it easier to distinguish the character. If the airship were completely black, it could very easily blend into the background of space.

▼This G2 Sideswipe and unreleased Scourge set is one of the most lavishly equipped Dr.Wu Micro Series small-car sets released recently. G2 Sideswipe comes with plenty of accessories and offers a lot of play value, while the unreleased Scourge “opens up” this design and pushes the appearance of the mold to its extreme. I think both figures represent the ultimate configuration of their respective molds. If you’re a Dr.Wu Micro Series collector, you have absolutely no reason to miss this set.
