▼Today I’m bringing you Dr. Wu’s new release — the ultra-small-scale Brutality and Slaughter cassette set. Many people may not recognize these two characters. Brutality and Slaughter are members of Soundwave’s cassette unit and only appeared once in transformation form in the G1 cartoon episode “Primacron.” Across the entire G1 series, their total screen time didn’t even exceed two seconds. Credit to the manufacturer for remembering them and even making figures for them. How does the toy itself perform? Let’s follow the review and find out.
The toy packaging continues the consistent style of the ultra-small-scale series. At the center of the front is 2D-style character art of Brutality and Slaughter, with the Dr. Wu logo in the lower right corner. The back of the box mainly shows the two cassettes in their dragon modes, as well as handling reminders for the small-scale series.

▼Inside the box are Brutality and Slaughter in their cassette forms, a bag of weapon accessories, two matte character cards, and an instruction sheet. We’ll start the introduction by transforming them into their dragon modes.

▼Slaughter’s dragon mode is a Ceratosaurus. While the toy remains faithful to G1, it improves on color separation and sculpted details. The original G1 Brutality looked like a big patch of plain white, but here the eyes are painted yellow, the white parts of the limbs are changed to blue, and armor-like sculpted details have been added to the back. However, due to transformation design considerations, the tail can’t be as sharp as in the G1 version.

▼The dragon’s mouth can open and close, and the head can tilt up and down. The forelimbs can lift sideways close to 90 degrees, and the elbows can bend 90 degrees. The hind legs can rotate vertically and, with the help of two directional joints, replicate the reverse-joint look of animal hind limbs. The pose of the hind legs can be adjusted freely. The tail has two directional joints and one flat rotation joint used in transformation, allowing Brutality to make small tail-swaying poses.
![Multi-part cassette figure set showing all transformable components Multi-part cassette figure set showing all transformable components]()
▼Slaughter’s back can mount a pair of rocket launchers. These did not appear in the G1 cartoon—unsurprising, given the characters’ combined screen time was under two seconds. The design is based on the old G1 toys, with high-quality silver paint on the launcher surface and metallic blue accents on the rocket tips. I think this design makes sense—after all, Slaughter is a cassette-bot; even though he’s a dinosaur, with such a small body he can’t realistically be biting enemies, so adding these launchers as an attack method feels logical. Isn’t there a lot of research nowadays into mounting firearms on quadruped robots? Should we say Transformers predicted the future back in the ’80s, or that art has now imitated reality?

▼The transformation process isn’t difficult, with a complexity similar to official Core Class figures. The cassette mode is less complete compared to the dragon mode—its shape and size are accurate, but it lacks other details. This is an inevitable compromise for easier transformation; achieving a perfectly complete cassette shell would make the conversion much less smooth.

▼Brutality’s dragon mode is entirely modeled after the G1 cartoon, with a Stegosaurus’ flat body and pink dorsal plates faithfully reproduced. Some may feel Brutality’s body looks too flat and thin, but that’s exactly how he looked in the G1 animation. However… Brutality, why is the top of your head so pointy?

▼The dragon head can rotate horizontally, and each leg has a ball joint. Other than that, Brutality has no articulation—due to the body’s unique structure, there’s really no space to add more joints to such a flat body.

▼The twin guns mounted on Brutality’s back are also based on the G1 toy. When attached, they add some width to the body, making Brutality look less thin.

▼Brutality’s transformation is even simpler, almost as easy as the original G1 toy. His cassette mode is much more complete than Slaughter’s, with a relatively intact shell and even hollow details sculpted in. The cassette size is compatible with Siege-related molds, meaning if you own Siege/Earthrise/Legacy United Soundwave, you can use this Dr. Wu set with them.

▼This Brutality and Slaughter set from Dr. Wu largely fills the gap for these two characters in the market. The toys are ultra-small-scale, their dragon modes are faithful to the G1 animation, the transformation is simple, and the cassette modes are compatible with official Generations Soundwave figures. If you want to complete your cassette unit lineup or need a small toy for casual play, this set is a good choice.
