2025 Seventh DX9 Toys D21 Red Storm Sideswipe

▼1. What surprised me the most is that times have indeed progressed. Compared to the 2012 MP12 Hound, the DX9 Red Storm Sideswipe surpasses it in terms of size, transformation structure, and accuracy of the design. After all, MP12 is a product from twelve years ago. If DX9 were worse than a product from twelve years ago, that would be quite disappointing.

▼2. Let’s talk about the vehicle mode of this DX9 Red Storm Sideswipe. Based on the first to the seventh images, the integration of the vehicle mode is quite impressive. There’s no exposed structure, and the classic “blinking lights” are present on the front of the vehicle. The components are tightly fit together with no gaps, and the vehicle form is seamless. However, personally, I think it would have been better if the windows used transparent black parts. The four tires are made of rubber, and the vehicle mode rolls smoothly. What’s most impressive is that the wheel hubs are made of metal.

▼3. In robot mode, the joints are gear joints, which make a satisfying “clicking” sound when moved, giving a very pleasant feel. The proportions of the robot mode are very balanced, and the backpack has been significantly reduced compared to MP12, fitting much more snugly to the body. From the side view, the backpack is barely noticeable (see the ninth image). The included accessories are a large gun, a shoulder cannon, a pair of large hammers, and a character card. While playing with it in robot mode, I recommend rotating the legs at the thighs to avoid damaging the parts during movement. The arm color is a light purple, matching the color of the large gun. I must say, I personally like this color. Overall, this Hound is great for both playing and displaying.

▼4. The last three comparison images really make me feel that times have indeed progressed. The design strength of DX9 is truly top-tier among third-party manufacturers. Not only is the character design highly accurate, but the reasonableness of the transformation structure is also very important. The smoothness of the transformation process truly reflects the designer’s skills. Personally, I really like this DX9 Hound, and it has strong expressiveness both in vehicle and robot modes.

Today, I bring you a review of DX9’s upcoming new product, the MP-scale Sideswipe. Since its gray prototype was unveiled, this Sideswipe has garnered tremendous attention, as it aims to recreate the official MP Sideswipe. Let’s explore this highly anticipated product together and see how it performs.

▼Since this is still the prototype stage, the toy does not come with official packaging or an instruction manual. The contents include the main Sideswipe figure, a shoulder cannon, a small gun, two sets of combined hammer accessories, and a pair of rearview mirrors. Being a prototype, there are some issues like burrs, paint overflow, and sprue marks, but these will be resolved in the final product. Please focus on the toy’s presentation—I won’t repeat these points later.

▼The head sculpt of Sideswipe is directly involved in the transformation process. However, compared to the animated design, it appears slightly thinner. The face in the animation looks more square, while the toy’s face is a bit sharper—likely a small compromise made to accommodate the transformation mechanism.

▼The chest area has been “compressed” to match the size of the chest plate in the animation. In the animation, the chest plate magically shrinks—a true Cybertronian compression technology. To replicate this in toy form, the designers had to put in a lot of effort to shrink the chest plate in humanoid mode.

▼In the animation, Sideswipe’s upper arms are not purely white but a light purple-gray. DX9 has done an excellent job capturing this detail. Additionally, the design of the shoulder armor and the arm lines are not overly angular but have been smoothed out.

▼The black parts of the skirt armor and lower legs feature a beautiful glossy finish. The silver parts on the toe tips are made of die-cast metal, adding significant weight to the toy.

▼The back of the toy is clean and tidy, with virtually no backpack. Although the car windows are slightly larger than in the animation, the neat storage of components at this level is already satisfying.

▼The head sculpt can rotate horizontally, tilt up and down, and lean to the side. The arms can rotate vertically and lift to about 90 degrees via a pull-down joint. The upper arms can rotate horizontally, and the elbows can bend up to 90 degrees. The hands can rotate, with the thumb featuring a ball joint and a directional joint, while the other four fingers are articulated as a unit with two directional joints.

The upper body can lean forward and rotate horizontally. The legs can kick forward and sideways to about 90 degrees and backward to about 45 degrees. The thighs can rotate, though they are slightly tight. The knees can bend up to 90 degrees, and the feet can move forward, backward, and inward for ground contact. The forefoot can also rotate. Aside from the additional hand and torso articulation, the poseability is similar to that of general classic-line toys.

▼Sideswipe’s weapon accessories include a shoulder cannon, a small gun, and a pair of hammers. Normally, the shoulder cannon is mounted on Sideswipe’s left shoulder, but in the animation, it occasionally appears on the right shoulder as well. The toy allows you to mount it on either side, so you can choose based on your preference.

▼The small gun matches the light purple color of the forearms, which is a standard feature for G1 characters. Notably, the small gun and shoulder cannon can swap positions, meaning the small gun can be mounted on the shoulder, and the shoulder cannon can be handheld.

▼Sideswipe’s melee weapons are a pair of hammers, with extendable handles. This design seems to be an original creation for the toy, as I don’t recall seeing it in the animation.

▼The hammers can be disassembled into other accessories. Sideswipe’s hands can be removed and replaced with a pair of hand hammers, a design that did appear in the animation.

▼Using the same method, the hands can also be replaced with two drills, or spikes, which is a design most fans are familiar with.

▼The transformation process is not difficult, and you can remember the steps after transforming it once. The design is also quite clever, involving mostly large-scale, straightforward movements without any overly complicated steps.

Sideswipe’s Lamborghini vehicle mode is highly polished, with the metallic red paint on the car shell looking stunning. The headlights are made of transparent material, and the tires are rubber. The only minor flaws are the visible protrusions underneath, necessary for transformation, and some slight paint chipping on the roof due to this being a review sample. However, these issues don’t significantly detract from its appeal.

▼The pop-up headlights at the front can be flipped out. However, possibly due to this being a review sample, the joints for the headlights are quite tight. If you can’t flip them out directly, you can push them out from the inside.

▼In summary, this MP-scale Sideswipe by DX9 showcases the company’s exceptional design capabilities. The toy faithfully recreates the G1 character with a stylish look and extensive articulation. Its versatile accessories add even more playability. If they had included Sideswipe’s flight backpack, it would have been even better.The transformation design is clever, straightforward, and not overly complex, achieving high levels of accuracy in both modes. The vehicle mode is equally impressive, featuring pop-up headlights. Overall, I highly recommend this Sideswipe, and I believe the final retail version will be even more stunning.
