▼MMC's comic-based line has always been one of my favorite Transformers series—beautiful paintwork, excellent quality, and most importantly, the transformations are not overly complex, making them great for handling and play. However, in recent years, it seems MMC has shifted focus to their own OX combiner line, and the Reformatted comic line toys seem to have been "formatted" indeed. Fortunately, the series has finally been revived, and their return begins with the tank-mode Tyrantron Megatron. Coincidentally, SS86 has also recently released a lot of information about Megatron, inevitably leading to the debate of whether tank Megatron or gun Megatron is better.
In my view, there’s no clear winner. The real question lies in why G1 originally made a handgun the leader of the Decepticons. This naturally makes supporters of tank Megatron feel that such a small weapon can’t possibly match up to Optimus Prime, who transforms into a massive truck.
For supporters of gun Megatron, accuracy and faithfulness to the original design are key—once a handgun, always a handgun. Transforming into a tank is considered heresy. Changing the gun into a tank in the movie purely because of legal issues is almost laughable. After all, that gun had quite a few scenes at the beginning of the movie and nearly went berserk in Starscream’s hands.
![Mastermind R-53 Tyrantron white red robot warrior with cannon Mastermind R-53 Tyrantron white red robot warrior with cannon]()
▼Tyrantron Megatron avoids these issues entirely, as there was never a handgun mode to begin with. Transforming into a sci-fi styled Cybertronian tank is perfectly natural here.
![Mastermind Tyrantron gray red tank form with cannon turret Mastermind Tyrantron gray red tank form with cannon turret]()
▼But like all toys that convert Megatron’s arm cannon into a tank cannon, MMC’s Tyrantron Megatron still suffers from the oversized turret problem. This makes the tank top-heavy and unbalanced—just like the SS86 Megatron.
![Mastermind Tyrantron gray robot tank with articulated cannon Mastermind Tyrantron gray robot tank with articulated cannon]()
▼The tank’s body also looks rather forced, especially with clear segmentation in the front and back, which significantly affects its visual appeal and makes the tank mode the toy’s weakest point.
![Mastermind Tyrantron gray tank robot with extended turret Mastermind Tyrantron gray tank robot with extended turret]()
▼Precision-wise, the toy is quite good. Even when Megatron is almost completely disassembled for tank mode, it still rolls smoothly on its treads—definitely one of MMC’s signature strengths.
![Mastermind R-53 Stormbringer Megatron gray tank robot warrior Mastermind R-53 Stormbringer Megatron gray tank robot warrior]()
▼Unfortunately, the tank’s undercarriage is poorly hidden. Tyrantron Megatron’s torso and waist are fully exposed, and the front treads look like raised arms in surrender. But these treads are actually Megatron’s backpack, which shows that the transformation isn’t as brutish as the underside might suggest.
![]()
▼Paint and detailing on the toy are excellent. The metallic paint feels premium, and the chest design is finely crafted. The silver with red highlights is very much in line with Megatron’s traditional color scheme.
![]()
▼Despite the mediocre tank design, the transformation is very fun. Tabs and locks are cleverly placed, and the satisfying clicks when parts lock into place make the process enjoyable.
![]()
▼Sadly, articulation in tank mode is severely lacking. The turret—formed from Megatron’s arm cannon and shoulder armor—has minimal rotation, though the machine gun and rocket launcher on top can move a bit.
![]()
▼The turret can at least lift upwards, which helps compensate for the lack of movement.
![]()
▼Tyrantron Megatron retains the consistent proportions of MMC’s comic line. I don’t have MMC’s miner Megatron for comparison, but showing it next to SS86 Constructicons still gives a good sense of its size.
![]()
▼Transformation complexity is moderate by today’s third-party standards. It’s harder than earlier MMC toys, but the design is clever. The shoulder armor flip-swap is particularly fun. However, the lower body transformation is overly simple, leading to a bulky tank rear.
![]()
▼Once transformed into robot mode, Tyrantron Megatron really shines. The robot mode far outclasses the alternate mode in both design and articulation.
![]()
▼Megatron’s look lives up to his title of “Emperor of Destruction”—burly limbs, solid body, mechanical feel, and of course, the iconic arm cannon. It’s hard to fault the robot design.
![]()
▼Even the backpack doesn’t look bulky, and instead adds to Megatron’s imposing silhouette.
![]()
▼That said, the default head sculpt feels too soft and out of character with the rest of the figure. Thankfully, you can swap the helmet color and facial expression to fix this.
![]()
▼Beyond looks, MMC also put a lot of effort into articulation. The elbows and knees use double joints, giving a wide range of motion.
![]()
▼The shoulders, however, are a bit complex and stiff. Posing them takes effort, but overall, they’re still quite flexible.
![]()
▼The chest and abdomen can extend and bend forward/backward, and even the backpack can shift positions with locking pegs for more dynamic posing.
![]()
▼With the backpack lifted and head sculpt changed, Megatron looks even more majestic.
![]()
▼A powerful build and excellent articulation allow Tyrantron Megatron to strike a wide range of poses—even squatting is effortless.
![]()
▼A big bonus is the large, flat feet with articulated toes and ankle tilts, which give it exceptional balance.
![]()
▼Even with the bulky shoulders and backpack, Megatron can pull off a one-legged pose like a champ—highly poseable and fun to handle.
![]()
▼The toy doesn’t come with many accessories—just weapons, an alternate helmet, and a replacement face.
![]()
▼But the arm cannon, flail, and giant sword are more than enough. Unfortunately, the pegs inside Megatron’s hands aren’t tight enough, so the flail and sword handles often fall out. As a side note, while Megatron’s articulated fingers are flexible, they can make the toy less playable. Personally, I think FT’s approach—only bending fingers, not side-to-side movement—is the best balance between poseability and playability.
![]()
▼Megatron is slightly smaller than MP scale, just about one head taller than Ocular Max PS-22 Ventus Blades. Despite being from the same manufacturer, Megatron’s quality is vastly superior.
![]()
All things considered, I’m very satisfied with MMC’s Tyrantron Megatron. The robot mode is powerful and striking, with excellent articulation and a variety of weapon options for dynamic posing. It looks fantastic on display. The transformation is clever but not overly complex, with thoughtfully designed steps and precise tabs. The only downside is the tank mode, which suffers from an oversized turret and unbalanced proportions. Still, it’s clear MMC prioritized the robot form and did their best to make the tank mode passable. Even so, given the overall quality, I have no hesitation recommending this toy to fellow fans.
