Compatible with Decepticons from the SS (Studio Series) & Optimus Prime from the War for Cybertron: Kingdom series.
Hello everyone, those who are familiar with me probably know that my interest in Transformers toys spans a wide range—from MP to SS, from non-transformable figures to statues—covering almost everything except small scales, which I generally avoid. Therefore, I don’t know much about NA as a manufacturer. Judging from the MP-scale figures they have released, such as Movie Soundwave, Tank Megatron, and Combaticons Brawl, their performance in larger sizes seems far inferior to their expertise in small-scale figures.
However, I must admit that NA has a solid grasp of market trends. This time, they launched a handgun Megatron ahead of the official line, potentially filling a gap for a product the official line may never release—a handgun Megatron designed to match the classic-scale SS86 Optimus Prime.
▼Unfortunately, it seems NA started development quite early and failed to anticipate that SS86 Optimus Prime would be taller than Kingdom Optimus Prime. As a result, this classic-scale handgun Megatron cannot align with SS86 Optimus Prime. According to the data I have, Kingdom Optimus Prime stands 175mm tall, SS86 Optimus Prime is 191mm, while NA’s handgun Megatron is only 171mm tall, which is rather awkward…
![]()
▼The height issue with NA’s handgun Megatron is undoubtedly a glaring flaw, but looking at the toy itself, its overall quality is quite commendable. Particularly, the transformation design is innovative; the fluidity of the transformation, while maintaining fidelity to both forms, even surpasses MP36. The leg storage and mode conversion are exceptionally well-done, offering a remarkably satisfying transformation experience—one I haven’t encountered in a long time. It makes me wonder: if they can craft such an excellent transformation for classic Megatron, why is Tank Megatron such a pain to deal with?
As a subject that the official line finds increasingly challenging to tackle, Megatron’s Walther P38 form is, of course, indispensable. This is the most iconic and nostalgic design for fans, one that has undoubtedly given countless designers sleepless nights over the decades.
![]()
▼Unfortunately, due to international regulations, fewer and fewer Megatron toys can transform into the classic handgun form. It’s ironic—real gun violence occurs every day, but they decide to nitpick on toys. Ridiculous, isn’t it?
![]()
▼The overall design of the toy is quite good, but the mechanisms like the bolt and trigger lack further detailing. These components don’t have fixed positions or springs; they simply move manually to wherever you place them.
![]()
▼This isn’t a case of the manufacturer being lazy; it’s because these parts are integrated into the transformation process, leaving no room for additional mechanisms. It’s similar to modern Headmaster toys, where most, except for FH’s juvenile series, have to use the chest cavity for transformations, thus making it impossible to recreate the G1 stat meters.
![]()
▼Since this is a classic-scale figure, it’s naturally smaller than MP36. Here’s roughly how it looks in hand.
![]()
▼The toy has excellent precision; the seams between parts are tight, and the components interlock securely with tabs, resulting in outstanding overall cohesion.
![]()
▼Of course, this is also thanks to the toy’s excellent design. The handgun mode doesn’t rely on many fragmented parts for transformation, so the gun body features several large, intact pieces. This deserves praise.
![]()
▼The scope doesn’t include any sound or light effects and is simply attached to the toy. This simplicity feels a bit underwhelming, especially for a product at this price point, where cutting corners like this seems unnecessary.
![]()
▼The barrel is a noticeable flaw in NA’s handgun Megatron in its disguise mode. There’s a visible gap where the barrel meets the main body, and it tends to tilt easily, affecting the overall look of the toy.
![]()
▼Here’s how it scales with SS86 Romulus, and in the same scenario, how it compares to SS86 Optimus Prime.
![]()
▼As mentioned earlier, the transformation of this toy is exceptionally ingenious and is its biggest advantage. Both the upper and lower body transformation steps feature standout highlights, and the entire process is incredibly smooth, making it one of the best designs I’ve encountered recently.
However, once transformed into robot mode, it seems to inherit some of the issues common to smaller-scale figures. The entire toy lacks ratchet joints. While this might not be a dealbreaker for classic-scale toys, all of Megatron’s joints feel notably loose, making it less enjoyable for play. This is arguably the biggest flaw of this figure.
In terms of aesthetics, NA’s handgun Megatron performs well, with little to criticize.
![]()
▼From the side view, there’s no backpack, which is rare for a Transformers toy with such a smooth transformation and high level of screen accuracy.
![]()
▼Even more impressive is that its back avoids the fragmented look seen in MP36. The only downside is a recessed section in the lower back.
![]()
▼The head sculpt is essentially a downsized version of MP36’s. My copy, unfortunately, has a small flaw with paint chipping on the right side of the chin. Besides the default head sculpt, NA includes two alternate expressions: a shouting face and a smirking face.
![]()
▼The waist can bend forward to perform bowing poses, but the joint here is far too loose. A light touch will cause Megatron to bow excessively, which really undermines his imposing presence as the Decepticon leader.
![]()
▼Aside from the loose joints, Megatron’s disconnected knee design is another minor flaw. While it doesn’t affect playability, it is visually unappealing.
![]()
▼To be fair, despite the loose joints, NA’s handgun Megatron has impressive articulation, allowing for a wide variety of dynamic poses.
![]()
▼The narrow foot design surprisingly supports Megatron in executing a flying kick pose.
![]()
▼With the waist’s forward-bending ability, Megatron’s crouching pose looks incredibly natural—if you can overlook his disconnected knees, that is…
![]()
▼NA provides Megatron with a complete set of weapons, including a lightsaber, a flail, and a small pistol.
![]()
▼Its high articulation, numerous accessories, and solid screen accuracy contribute to excellent playability, somewhat compensating for the loose joints.
![]()
▼As seen in the images, SS86 Optimus Prime’s head roughly reaches Grimlock’s collarbone, while NA’s handgun Megatron only reaches the lower edge of Grimlock’s insignia. Even with the cannon added, it’s still unable to match Optimus Prime in height, making this another major flaw alongside the loose joints.
![]()
▼It’s even shorter than SS’s Voyager-class Optimus Prime from the seventh movie. How awkward…
![]()
Opinions on this toy are highly polarized, reflecting its extreme strengths and weaknesses. Its screen accuracy meets expectations, while its excellent transformation design, articulation, and playability are reasons why some fans hold it in high regard. On the other hand, its inability to match Optimus Prime, loose joints, and steep price are reasons why others criticize it.In my opinion, there’s no right or wrong here; NA’s handgun Megatron’s strengths and flaws are objectively present. If you’re looking to experience an outstanding transformation, this figure might be worth adding to your collection. Otherwise, there’s no need to pay the current high price for this Megatron.
