Hello everyone. Today, we bring you the latest product from UT, the R08 Braking.
After months of waiting, UT has finally introduced Braking, one of the twins from Transformers 2. The last release, Dumb Skids, wasn’t among UT’s best-performing products, but this time, Braking has addressed some of the issues seen in Dumb Skids. Let’s dive into the review and find out more.
▲The toy includes only the Dumb Skids figure since the one I have is a review sample. It doesn’t come with official packaging or instructions, but these will be included in the final product.
Compared to Mudflap, Dumb design has a significant improvement in aesthetics. The boxy appearance of Mudflap has been resolved this time.
▲The head sculpt continues the style of Mudflap, with Braking grinning widely and showing off a big gold tooth. The hair-like structure on the top of the head leans to one side.
▲The chest is formed from the disassembled vehicle front, with layers of car shells stacked together, which is very fitting. Thanks to the vehicle design, Braking’s torso transformed from the car front is smoother and more rounded compared to Mudflap.
▲Braking’s hands are asymmetrical, with a smaller left hand and a larger right hand, opposite to Mudflap.
▲The legs have a stronger mechanical feel compared to the upper body. The thigh armor uses green and silver paint, and the wheels and guardrails on the sides of the feet are similar to Mudflap.
▲As for the back, it’s not entirely accurate, similar to Mudflap with car shells on the back, but Braking has additional doors and structures, making the design more visually appealing.
▲The toy’s head sculpt can rotate horizontally and tilt slightly up and down. The arms can rotate vertically, and the shoulder joints are geared joints, allowing for a lateral raise far beyond 90 degrees. The upper arms can rotate horizontally, while the elbows can also rotate and feature geared joints that bend approximately 90 degrees. The wrists can rotate horizontally, and the hands can adjust angles.
The left thumb has a ball joint and a directional joint, while the other three fingers are movable as a single unit with two directional joints. The right thumb has a ball joint and two directional joints, while the other three fingers are individually articulated, each with two directional joints.
▲The waist can rotate horizontally. The legs can kick forward and backward to about 90 degrees, and the side-kick joints are geared joints with a range close to 90 degrees. The thighs can rotate horizontally, and the knee joints are also geared, allowing for a 90-degree bend. The feet can tilt sideways for ground contact, and the front toes can bend upward and tilt sideways as well.
Overall, the articulation is quite impressive. It essentially includes all the articulation features typically found in classic-style toys. Additionally, the body is equipped with multiple geared joints, providing a satisfying tactile experience during play.
▲Moreover, due to the fully articulated structure of the right hand, Braking can even pose for a universal “friendly hand gesture.” “Hey, Devastator, my fingers can transform too—guess which one? Koo-Koo-Ka-KI↗KI↓KI↗…”
▲I compared Braking to UT’s previous release, Mudflap, side by side. It’s quite clear that Braking’s physique looks more pleasing than Mudflap’s. The details and three-dimensional feel of Braking’s chest armor are much better than Mudflap’s.
▲Relatively speaking, Mudflap’s backpack is thinner, while Braking’s backpack has more dimensionality. Although neither figure’s back is entirely screen-accurate, I personally prefer Braking’s design.
▲Braking comes with no weapon accessories. His weapon accessories were included with Mudflap—two identical guns, one of which can be shared with Braking. If you buy only Braking, you won’t have any weapons. If you want weapons, you’ll need to purchase both figures.
▲The transformation process of Braking is not difficult, making it stress-free to play. Thanks to UT’s consistent strength in achieving dual-mode representation with uncomplicated transformation designs, Braking performs quite well in both modes.
Although Braking and Mudflap are remolds, their transformation designs have many detailed differences. I find Braking’s transformation smoother than Mudflap’s.
Braking’s vehicle mode is a Chevrolet Beat concept car, with a high level of accuracy in the toy. The black paint on the car’s sides is well done.
▲The rear of the toy car differs significantly from the movie version. In the movie, the rear glass of the trunk is much larger, and the car lights are two pairs of silver-white lights. The toy, however, comes with a single pair of red lights.
▲One of Mudflap’s standout features was its near-complete interior car cabin. This time, Braking retains the same detail. If UT could include figurines of Sam, Mikaela, Leo, and Simmons to fit inside the cabin, similar to Leader Class toys, that would be even better.
▲I believe Braking’s vehicle mode outperforms Mudflap’s in all aspects. For Mudflap, the need to replicate the chest design and color scheme in robot mode led to compromises in the accuracy of the car’s front paint. Braking, however, does not face this issue.
▲To summarize, this UT Braking, while a remold of Mudflap, clearly outshines its counterpart in many ways. It doesn’t feel like a sloppy remold; instead, it showcases significant differences in details and transformation design. The toy has a high level of accuracy in sculpt, multiple gear joints throughout, great articulation, and an easy transformation process, making it a joy to handle. The only downside is the lack of accessories. If you don’t own Mudflap, Braking will come without weapons.
▲If these performances from Braking and Mudflap came from other manufacturers, they would undoubtedly be considered excellent figures. However, since they come from UT, their overall quality doesn’t quite match up to UT’s previous works. Still, the toys themselves are good enough to be rated above average. Considering how rare toys of these two characters are, with no alternatives currently available, I highly recommend them if you’re interested in these characters or want to complete your collection. I’m also curious if UT plans to remold these two into their Transformers 3 versions. Lastly, I eagerly await UT’s upcoming Stinger and Optimus Prime releases, hoping they continue to surprise us!
That’s it for today’s review. Thank you for watching! Feel free to leave your comments and suggestions below. I read every single one of your messages, and your support is my greatest motivation.
