▼Today I’m bringing you UT’s new release, Transformers 4 Stinger. UT’s live-action movie line has always been famous for “robot inside car” and “Cybertron compression technology,” achieving extremely high accuracy in both modes without making the transformation overly complex. I honestly can’t remember how long it has been since the gray prototype of this Stinger was revealed until now, when it’s finally about to ship. At the very least, I’ve been waiting for this figure all along. Who would’ve thought that UT would actually crack the technical challenge of making into a toy the hyper-humanoid design that in the movie was achieved with particle transformation? Let’s follow this review and take a closer look.
Since this is a sample review piece, there’s no final packaging or instruction manual yet—those will come with the mass release. The contents include the Stinger figure, arm cannon, arm blade, a pair of missile pods for robot mode, and a pair of missile units for vehicle mode. I have to say, the designer of Transformers 4 Bumblebee and Stinger is truly a genius—their designs are so extremely humanoid and fragmented, with almost no visible car parts, that any toy designer seeing it would probably curse. Yet UT actually pulled it off. My first impression when holding it was: if no one told me this was a UT product, I would’ve thought it was a non-transforming model kit.



▼Stinger’s head sculpt is spot-on. The iconic faceplate shared by Transformers 4 Bumblebee and Stinger is well represented. The green visor detailing, combined with the other red, black, and silver paint apps, is handled with precision, without obvious missing or messy paint. Since Stinger always appeared with the faceplate on in the movie, the toy doesn’t include an alternate open-face sculpt.



▼In Transformers 4, Bumblebee and Stinger abandoned the traditional intact car-hood chest design, replacing it with sharp chest armor. The toy chest armor is highly accurate, though slightly flatter compared to the movie. After all, transformation design has to be considered—you can’t cheat with particle transformation like in the film—so achieving this level of sculpt is completely acceptable.

▼Stinger’s legs have a very muscular feel. The shins use relatively intact sculpted parts, while the thighs are layered with car panels to form a muscular texture. The signature knee spikes from Bumblebee in the first trilogy are also retained. The feet, for transformation storage reasons, aren’t as large as in the movie, but the overall look isn’t compromised, and many design cues from the first trilogy can still be spotted.



▼Despite being a transforming toy, Stinger’s back is clean with zero backpack while still preserving detailed sculpting—this is UT’s unique strength in their live-action figures. The four spiked wheels iconic to Bumblebee and Stinger in Transformers 4 are connected via mechanical arms. Even though neither character actually used them in combat in the movie, they definitely give off a strong offensive vibe.



▼Stinger’s head can swivel and tilt up at a wide angle. The arms can rotate vertically and lift sideways beyond 90 degrees. The elbows bend well over 90 degrees and can swivel. The wrists rotate, and the hands can fold inward. The hands are fully articulated this time: the thumb has one ball joint and two hinges, while the other three fingers each have two hinges.



▼The waist can swivel and crunch forward. The legs can kick forward and back well beyond 90 degrees, and can spread sideways about 45 degrees. The thighs swivel, the knees bend far past 90 degrees, and the ankles tilt inward, with the toes bending upward. Aside from the slightly limited outward spread of the legs, Stinger’s articulation is nearly flawless—posing won’t be an issue.



▼The iconic weapon of Bumblebee and Stinger in Transformers 4 is the claw cannon, which attaches directly onto the arm, integrating seamlessly.



▼This pair of missile pods, as I recall, came from the scene where Bumblebee fired missiles at Galvatron, who then particle-shifted to evade them. For some reason, Stinger also comes with them. Could this be a tease that Bumblebee is already planning ahead?



▼As for this Dino-style arm blade, I really can’t place its origin. In the movie, the KSI drones that resembled Stinger had dual blades mounted on each arm, but giving Stinger a single blade like this is puzzling. The arm blade can attach either to the side of the arm or underneath like Hydra’s—just depends on personal preference.





▼Stinger’s transformation design is UT’s familiar large-panel “robot-in-car” approach. Compared to UT’s earlier car figures, it’s a bit more complex, and the first transformation takes longer to learn. One major highlight is that the four spiked wheels on Stinger’s back are fully integrated into transformation and fold away, which is a big accomplishment.
Stinger’s vehicle mode is a Pagani Huayra supercar. As a transforming toy, the completion level here is extremely high. The car panels align within normal tolerance, and the paintwork has no obvious flaws. As mentioned earlier, the windshield is made from soft plastic, so there’s no worry about breaking it. The only drawback is that the toy’s front end is slightly shorter compared to the real car—but considering this is a transforming figure, achieving this level of accuracy is already impressive.







▼Normally I don’t comment on a figure’s undercarriage, since most people don’t care whether it’s perfectly tidy or accurate, but let’s look at Stinger’s underside today. The bottom is densely packed with mechanical structures, with every inch of space inside the shell fully utilized. This is basically the theoretical maximum for efficient internal storage.



▼The vehicle mode accessory is this pair of missile pods, used during Stinger’s pursuit of the Autobots. These pods store perfectly in robot mode and transform together with it, without requiring removal.



▼Overall, Stinger lives up to expectations. It continues UT’s consistently excellent design style while achieving extremely accurate representation in both robot and vehicle modes for a transforming toy. All weapons from the movie are included, articulation is on par with the rest of the series, transformation is bold but not overly complicated, and the spiked wheels and missile pods are fully integrated. In short, this is currently the definitive Transformers 4 Stinger figure—no competition. It fully deserves the title of product of the year, and for me, it’s already a lock for my top 10 figures of the year. Simply put, this Stinger is highly recommended.

▲First of all, look at the Stinger's human figure, the front is absolutely strong and invincible, this reduction, this body proportion, this muscle line, this carrier hiding degree, familiar UT is back!



▲The back is also very cleanly organized, with the Stinger's iconic frontal 4 wheeled stabbing weapon adding to the dominance!Even on the back, you can't see much of the vehicle body parts, it's breathtaking!



▲Comparing with MPM03 Bumblebee, UT Dinosaur, Optimus Prime, and Galvatron, it's still more in scale, typical MPM size, with a height of about 17.5cm visually (17cm for Hornet).



▲Because it's a 3D printed piece, the head sculpture details look rather mushy, so you guys can just look at a general idea!



▲The only thing I'm not too happy with about the human figure is that the chest and abdomen are a bit cut off, I wonder if it will be better after coloring?



▲In fact, the abdomen is okay, mainly the chest is divided in two, the beauty of the degree of impact is still relatively large, I do not know if the follow-up can be modified again.



▲In terms of mobility, all limbs move at a good angle, it's the whacking POSE that's done a bit stiffly, and from the pictures it doesn't seem to have any bending joints, which may be as much of a sacrifice as it was back in the days of confinement in order to take into account morphing.



▲Then there is the carrier form!Compared with the real Pagani sports car, the degree of reproduction is also up to 80%, the whole type is made, and not very broken, as a transformation product this carrier I can completely accept.



▲The front end doesn't fit together much, how does such a large chunk of the shell disappear, Cybertron compression technology, and space conversion is coming back into play!



▲The rear end can be a bit crumbly, so it's good to see that it's kind of clean with no messy parts exposed.



▲The chassis can be seen, this time the storage is full, obsessive-compulsive disorder a book to satisfy.And this time the transformation inside and outside the reversal of the ultimate, 90% of the car shell hidden, it seems that the transformation will bring us a big surprise!

▲All in all this Stinger as long as the paint job doesn't flop and the pricing is a bit more reasonable, it should be another year's best, and I'm looking forward to playing this product in the second half of the year!
