Iron Factory EX-75 Optimus Primal
Material: ABS
Height: Unknown
Estimated Releasing Date: 2nd Quarter 2024
Today, I’ll be reviewing Iron Factory’s new release, the Great Ape General, which is a samurai-styled reimagining of Optimus Primal. This figure has been teased with official images for a long time, and it’s finally released. How does it perform? Let’s find out together.
▼The packaging follows Iron Factory’s usual style, which is relatively understated. Through the window, you can see the main figure. Below the window, the words “Great Ape General” are printed along with a beast head emblem. The back of the box mainly displays the toy’s two modes and some accessory configurations.
![]()
▼The contents of the package include the ape figure, two swords, a set of connectors, two pairs of interchangeable hands, and an instruction manual. Iron Factory has done an excellent job handling the humanoid form—whether it’s the overall aesthetic or the detailed features, everything is top-notch.
![]()
▼The head sculpt of the ape builds upon the BW (Beast Wars) design, adding elements of samurai helmet flair, neck armor, and layered plating. The green paint on the eyes and the silver metallic finish on the face are meticulously applied, with no paint overflow.
![]()
▼The chest features abundant details, retaining the classic red circular structure in the center. The silver armor on both sides is layered outward, while the abdominal armor tapers inward, creating the appearance of an inverted triangle for the upper body.
![]()
▼The shoulder armor resembles beast fur and is angled upwards. The upper arms feature red straps, while the forearm armor includes both a beast fur structure and a snarling beast design. The fists are quite large and can be swapped out for open hands or weapon-holding hands through plug-and-play functionality.
![]()
▼The skirt armor primarily adopts a Japanese armor style, with layered plates and red straps. The color scheme on the thighs clearly takes inspiration from the BW design. The center structure of the lower legs resembles armor, while the sides mimic the texture of beast fur.
![]()
▼Although this ape is a transformable figure, its backpack doesn’t appear overly bulky. The silver armor on the torso has a great texture, and the details on the rear skirt armor and the straps on the legs are all intact.
![]()
▼The head sculpt allows for horizontal rotation as well as looking up and down. The arms can rotate vertically and raise horizontally up to 90 degrees. The upper arms can rotate, the elbows bend at a large angle, the wrists can rotate, and the hands can adjust their angles.
The waist can rotate horizontally, and the legs, with adjustments to the skirt armor, can kick forward, backward, and sideways by about 90 degrees. The thighs can rotate, the knees bend slightly over 90 degrees, and the ankles feature a combination of directional and ball joints, allowing the feet to make 360-degree ground contact. The poseability of this figure is comparable to that of general Classics-line toys and is more than adequate for standard posing.
![]()
▼This time, the ape includes its classic shoulder cannons. In its standard form, the cannons are stored in an upward position, but they can be deployed when needed.
![]()
▼Additionally, the ape comes with two swords of different lengths. The blades are metallic blue, paired with golden hilts and black handles. Personally, I think these swords look a bit too thin compared to the robust humanoid form.
![]()
▼The two swords can be combined using a connector to form a double-headed sword, similar to those seen in BW and Transformers 7.
![]()
▼The swords can also be mounted on the ape’s back using the connector, and their angles can be adjusted as desired.
![]()
▼The swords can also be mounted on the side skirt armor, although this configuration isn’t mentioned in the packaging or instructions. The reason for this omission is unclear.
![]()
▼The transformation process is straightforward, roughly on par with official Deluxe-class toys in terms of difficulty. Compared to the highly polished and aesthetically pleasing humanoid form, the beast form appears noticeably abstract. The gorilla’s head has a fierce expression with wide eyes, enhancing its intimidating look. By adjusting the pose, the forearm armor can face forward to emphasize strength. However, the hollow area beneath the gorilla’s head detracts slightly from the overall appearance.
![]()
▼The issues on the back side of the gorilla are more pronounced. The transformation of the legs is somewhat simplistic and doesn’t align well with the gorilla’s structure. Additionally, the storage for the side skirt armor leaves significant room for improvement.
![]()
▼The twin swords can be mounted on the gorilla’s back in the same position as in its humanoid form. While this feature feels like a bonus, it does provide a way to store weapons in the beast mode.
![]()
▼To summarize, this samurai-style gorilla, a reimagined design from Iron Factory, maintains the company’s high standards in its humanoid form, featuring exceptional aesthetics and high-quality detailing. The toy boasts excellent articulation and includes the iconic shoulder cannons. While the beast form is somewhat abstract, it remains a toy with a distinct Iron Factory style. For those who appreciate this design approach, this figure is worth considering.

▼Appearance Display

▼This time, the figure adopts a Japanese-style Optimus Primal. In terms of design alone, it looks fine, but given the general impression players have of Optimus Primal, incorporating Japanese elements into a gorilla figure might feel a bit unusual. The entire body features black paint with both glossy and matte finishes, giving it a decent texture.

▼The head is distinctly armored in design, with a metallic paint finish.

▼Chest

▼Back

▼The back cannon can also be folded down.

▼Upper Body

▼Side of the Body

▼Arms

▼The forearm features a roaring gorilla face as decoration.

▼Side of the Arm

▼The hand is made of soft rubber material.

▼Alternative Hand Shapes

▼The weapons include two katanas, one long and one short.

▼The hand parts are tight during installation and may require lubrication.

▼The sword handles can be detached and combined by replacing the handles.

▼The sword rack parts can be assembled and mounted on the back.

▼Skirt Armor

▼The side skirt armor is connected to the rear skirt armor via a ball joint on one side, making its movement slightly different from typical skirt armor structures.

▼Legs

▼Feet

▼Beast Mode Display

▼There aren’t many major steps in the transformation process, so the difference between the two modes isn’t particularly significant. It essentially resembles an armored gorilla, but the head-raising angle is limited, making it appear slightly unnatural.

▼The gorilla head features an open-mouth design, looking rather fierce, with metallic paint applied. However, the head crest on this particular unit appears to be misaligned, and attempts to adjust it were unsuccessful.

▼The base of the gorilla head, aside from the transformation hinge at the back, does not connect to the body. In beast mode, the shoulder cannons need to be lowered, which blocks the protrusions on both sides. Therefore, the base of the head is designed to default to a fully folded position.

▼The maximum head-raising angle in the default position is shown in the image.

▼You can increase the head-raising angle by lifting the base plate, but care must be taken to avoid overly exposing the internal structure.

▼Beast Mode Chest Armor

▼Upper Body

▼Back

▼Legs
The transformation design for the lower legs does not fully enclose the thighs, leaving some room for movement.
